Vision Ed Connect

Services

Six ways I help students access their education.

Every engagement begins with the student — their vision, their media, their environment — and ends with a team that knows how to keep the door open after I leave.

Functional Vision Assessments (FVA)

A comprehensive evaluation of how a student uses their vision in real educational settings — classroom, cafeteria, playground, and transitions. Not a clinical eye exam: a functional picture of what the student can access, under what conditions, and what needs to change.

What your district receives

  • A written report with clear findings your IEP team can act on
  • Specific accommodation and environmental recommendations
  • Assistive technology and materials recommendations matched to the student

Learning Media Assessment (LMA)

The LMA determines the most appropriate learning medium for each student: visual, auditory, tactile (Braille), or a dual-media approach. This decision shapes everything — materials, instruction, technology, and the student's path to literacy.

What your district receives

  • A documented media recommendation grounded in data, not guesswork
  • Guidance on literacy instruction matched to the chosen medium
  • A rationale your team can defend in any IEP meeting

Assistive Technology Training

Instruction in screen readers, magnification software, refreshable Braille displays, and the other tools that open digital content. The goal is never "knows the software" — it is independent access, measured by what the student can do unaided.

What your district receives

  • Direct student instruction with progressive independence goals
  • Staff coaching so classroom teams can reinforce skills between sessions
  • Setup and configuration guidance for district-issued devices

IEP & 504 Support

Collaboration with IEP teams to develop appropriate goals, accommodations, and service minutes for students with visual impairments. I translate assessment findings into language the whole team — teachers, administrators, families — can use.

What your district receives

  • Measurable goals aligned to assessment data
  • Accommodation recommendations that survive real classrooms
  • Participation in IEP meetings, in person or by video

Remote TVI Services

Virtual instruction and consultation for districts that cannot secure a local TVI. Sessions run over secure, FERPA-compliant video, with adapted digital materials prepared in advance. For many rural and small districts, this is the difference between full service and no service.

What your district receives

  • Scheduled direct instruction and consultative support, fully remote
  • Adapted digital materials delivered before each session
  • The same assessment and IEP services, adapted for distance delivery

Family Training & Support

Guidance for families on supporting their child's visual needs at home — from everyday adaptations to advocacy training and connection to community resources. Families who understand the plan become its strongest implementers.

What families receive

  • Practical strategies for home routines and homework access
  • Advocacy training for IEP meetings and school communication
  • Connections to community and state resources

Not sure which service your student needs?

That's what the first conversation is for. Describe the situation — I'll tell you plainly what I'd recommend.
